King of Swords

The shogun ruler sits relaxed in his palace. The king's lower garment is decorated with the stylized crest of his family. His checked upper gown is unusual in that aristocratic period. His outer kimono is decorated with a scattered-motif design which became very popular during the Edo Period. The flower depicts a paulownia, a symbol of justice and benevolence.

The King of Swords represents power, authority, nobility and the law. His sword is the sign of his authority, whereas the fan, a popular accessory among all social classes, is a symbol of refinement. Although he is unswayable, he rules justly and without tyranny. The originality of garment designs denotes the creativity, abundance of ideas and analytical ability.

This card represents an active and determined energy, or someone with many ideas, thoughts and designs.
